Speaking of Inspirational ice skating – I Anita Jones applaud Rachel Flatt, 2010 U.S. National Ice-Skating Champion, for her speaking engagement during the “Figure Skating in Harlem’s benefit gala, in April 2009, held at Central Park’s Wollman Rink. Dorothy Hamill, America’s 1976 Olympic Gold Medalist in ice-skating was also there and heard Rachel announce Harlem’s new, ice-skating student program, breakthrough, providing free ice-skating lessons, together with academic studies, for teenage girls in Harlem. Wow! Just thinking about the thrill of learning how to ice-skate, since I first attempted to, makes, me wish, in retrospect that someone offered me free, ice-skating classes, to encourage me to become a scholar
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if all U.S. public school classrooms receive ice skating lessons and ice hockey lessons as great rewards to be a scholar?
Debi Thomas, the first black U.S. Skating Champ, during the 1980’s certainly influenced my ice-skating interest. It was 12 years ago, when I advanced from being a frequent roller skater, since my mid teens, to become an ice-skater. I was already courageous, though too often, I frequently fell, during attempts to self-train myself as an ice-skater. Finally I couldn’t tolerate being so painfully naïve. Today, still adhering to the same principles, values and regulations of all amateur, Olympic ice-skaters and champions, with the aid of professional, coaches I’ve won my first free-style ice-skating competition and 62 prizes within 10 years.
I’m known as the professional model and evening shift legal administrative assistant, who can’t avoid spending more time on ice than attending modeling “go sees” and auditions. Why? Some people will admit that anyone who gets blissfully “hooked on ice,” via ice-skating is flying on the ground, not in an airplane; not in a vehicle. Ice-skating has taught me to become more focused, patient and disciplined with a positive outlook. In recent years I developed a fine physical fitness routine, practicing aerobics, Yoga and meditation.
Up until the 1990’s America led the world in ice-skating champions. The ice skating sport is less expensive than ever, and portable, inexpensive ice-skating rinks are obtainable for outdoor and indoor, including home installation. Although strict figure skating regulations have been modified by free-style, ice-skating, the popularity of this recreational sport in America is nil. Rollerblading and skate boarding became the norm for America’s youth, during the past two decades, but slightly affected the ice-skating industry, considering increasing popularity of ice-hockey in the U.S. and abroad.
Overall this book targets America’s new wave of ice-skaters – youth or adults — who may dare to experience the invigorating healthy-lifestyle rewards of ice-skating. Readers will learn to prepare themselves for ice-skating, proper ice-skating gear, safely practice fundamental ice skating from start to finish. Newcomers will be amazed as to how their dexterity and breathing improves, upon practicing ice skating, and with the arrival of my video, they’ll learn to master basic ice-skating movements, rhythms and techniques shared.
